New training programme
Posted: 28 Oct 2024
IAFL is delighted that a new training programme on International Family Law that our European Chapter have developed for the INPPA (the National Institute for the Training and Improvement of Lawyers) is to be rolled out shortly. The programme is a four-week, online training course on Introductory aspects of European Cross Border Family Law for junior lawyers.
The training will be on four consecutive weeks, covering Divorce, Children, Maintenance and Matrimonial Property, with each session being around an hour and a quarter. Each week there will be a 40 minute pre-recorded video by IAFL Judicial Fellow, Prof Ian Sumner on the PIL aspects of the relevant EU Family Regulations in each topic, followed by a live 30 minute presentation and Q&A from two experienced international family lawyers- from amongst the jurisdictions of England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. You can find out more here.
This is the first ever dedicated training on International Family Law in Romania and arises from a connection made by our now President, and then European Chapter President, Rachael Kelsey, at the EPK Conference in Vienna in 2022. When Rachael met Prof Dan Oancea, the Director of Training at the INPPA, he relayed that there was limited training for lawyers in Romania on Family Law, and certainly no training on international family law. After that conversation the European Chapter - and Vice-President, William Healing and President, Sandra Verburgt, in particular- have worked incredibly hard to create a programme that will provide first class education on international family law for Romanian lawyers at an early stage in their career. Our hope is that this work will inspire and encourage the best of the next generation of lawyers in Romania to consider a career in Family Law, and broaden knowledge and understanding of the issues that arise for families and children when there are cross border issues.
We would like to offer particular thanks to the IAFL fellows who have very generously given up their time to provide this training, especially Prof Ian Sumner who pre-recorded the video sessions and those who will be presenting at the live events, Alberto Perez Cedillo, Charanjit Batt, Armando Restignoli, Isabelle Rein Lescastereyres, Eleri Jones, Marie von Maydell, Vicky de Sanna and Adriana de Rutter.
