Hague Symposium in Buenos Aires

Posted: 12 Jun 2013 by Cheryl Hepfer

On September 17, 2013, the day before the AGM is to convene, the IAML Hague Symposium to discuss practical implications of Hague Proceedings on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction will be held in Buenos Aires.  The presentation will bring together international experts in this area of practice.

It is our goal to engage with members of the family law bar in locations where our meetings are being held.

Nancy Berg began hosting these seminars at the US Chapter Meeting in Minnesota.  It was her foresight and energy that led to her hosting a delegation of 14 lawyers for a two-day Symposium addressing concerns of practitioners in Japan should that country accede to The Hague Convention.  Due to its huge success, in September, 2012, at the AGM in Singapore, members of the local bar joined in a similar presentation.  Fellows from around the world, as well as a nationally-recognized child psychologist and a Federal District Court Judge from the United States were able to speak with the delegation through simultaneous translation services.

The Symposium provides an opportunity for local attorneys, the judiciary, and members of the local central authorities to learn from each other and to discuss the evolution of the case law and practice throughout the world.

Representatives of the Argentine Central Authority will discuss their procedures, and Judge Gladys Marsala will address evidentiary issues in Hague proceedings in Argentina.  Fellows from the United States, Japan, Chile, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia will be reporting on the implementation of The Hague proceedings in their jurisdictions.

The Symposium is also open to Fellows who will be attending the AGM.  More information is available on the website at www.iaml.org/events/buenos-aires-hague-symposium and registration information will be added shortly.  Anyone interested in attending should contact Jennifer Heinen (jennifer.heinen@wbdlaw.com) for more information.

We are grateful to Fabiana Quaini and Nancy Berg for their efforts in putting this Symposium together.
